RW Lynch Television AdvertisingThis week, RW Lynch stumbled upon an article in Forbes magazine dropping an advertising bombshell: Within 5 years, ad spend for TV, the king of advertising for the last half a century, will be surpassed by online ad spending. In its article entitled “Online Ad Spend to Overtake TV,” Forbes writes “advertisers will spend almost $77 billion online, comprising 35% of overall ad spending.”

In fact, in the UK online spending already ranks as king of ad spend, gaining that title in September of 2009, according to an article in The Guardian. “It has taken the internet little more than a decade to become the biggest advertising sector,” the article reported, largely due to unprecedented consumer adoption of the new technology and superior ad return versus other advertising methods.

What You Don’t Know Will Hurt You

If you’re surprised by this news, prepare to be shocked. While many advertisers are barely waking up to the fact that online advertising works, those same advertisers are just now looking into online tactics – like SEO and PPC – that, in this fast-paced new world, are already old hat. As Forbes reports:

“Mobile ads will overtake social ads and email marketing already this year: They’ll hit $8.2 billion in revenues by 2016 as advertisers will want to reach people while they’re on mobile phones and tablets, not just searching at their desk.” *
