RW Lynch Memorial DayThe Memorial Day holiday is the traditional kick-off to the summer. With summer comes more travel and with more travel the risk of motor vehicle accidents increases dramatically as well as the number of calls to RW Lynch’s Injury HelpLine®

The National Safety Council has recently released its estimates for the number of motor vehicle crashes for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. According to the Council, for the past six years, the Memorial Day holiday weekend has averaged an 11.5% increase in traffic fatalities compared to similar non-holiday periods. This year the Council estimates 420 traffic fatalities and another 42,000 “medically consulted injuries ” (the Council considers these injuries serious enough that a medical professional was consulted) will occur over the summer kick-off weekend from traffic collisions.

Given these grim statistics the Council offers up its safety recommendations to help keep us all safe through the holiday weekend and throughout the summer:

  • Refrain from all cell phone use behind the wheel
  • Make sure all passengers are buckled up and children are in age-appropriate safety seats
  • All children 12 and under should always be in the back seat
  • Allow plenty of travel time to avoid frustration and diminish the impulse to speed
  • Drive defensively and exercise caution, especially during inclement weather
  • Avoid driving while drowsy
  • Designate a “non-drinking” driver – even moderate consumption of alcohol impairs reaction time and driving judgment

Stay safe and have a wonderful Memorial Day Holiday.
